The 2nd Monday of the month is our competition night.

  • Our Competition Program is available from our website.
  • There are 3 grades, Advanced, A and Open. Open Grade is usually for beginner photographers and for those members who just enjoy taking photographs without doing extensive editing.
  • We have photos presented both in print form as well as Digital (EDI) option. (EDI – Electronic Data Images)
  • Both Digital and Print contests require you to enter online on this website and include a digital copy of each entry. This will be displayed in an image gallery on the website
  •  All photographs are displayed and critiqued by the judge on the night. Most judges provide very beneficial feedback, from which we all learn
  • At the end of the year we run our “Photo of the Year”competition (POTY). The photos entered in this competition must be photographs that have been entered in competitions throughout the year.

The 4th Monday of the month is our tutorial night.

  • We have had many and varied tutorials and continue to do so every month.
  • Suggestions from members as to what tutorials they would like to have are very welcome.

The 1st Monday of the Month is Special Interests group night

  • Members choose their own interest subject to collect 4-10 images on.
  • This is not for competition but to allow members to explore their own photography journey.

Sydney Photographic exhibition

I have had plenty of interest in this trip so I have scheduled a date for a guided tour with the library. I will send out more details closer

Date :11 April 2024

Time: 11am

Duration: 30-45 minutes

Photographic exhibition Sydney

The state library of NSW is holding a photographic exhibition on Australian photography, both historical and modern, for most of this year. They offer a guided service for about 10-20 people, so I am looking into organising a trip. The plan would be to catch the 8am train down from Morisset which would allow us to start the tour at about 11am then we would have lunch at Circular Quay. The afternoon would be free to some street photography allowing everyone to catch the train home in their own time. There would be some walking as we need to get from Martin Place to the library and then some walking around, probably no more than a few Kms. At this stage I am seeing if there are enough numbers before booking the tour. It would be in the second half of April but outside school holidays. If you are interested, please drop me a line preferably before the end of next week as I will then be in NZ for a month. David

Tutorials

Hello, I am looking into tutorials for this year and I am approaching members to see if they have any ideas or can give a tutorial. Ian English has already done one on self portraits and is following that up with more sessions. I am giving a talk on Adventure photography in March and I am seeing if any members can offer something for the tutorial sessions. It can be a subject that you are very familiar with or it can be a photo trip that you have been on. If you have been on a specific photo journey and have some nice images to show and can talk about the gear you took then that would be ideal. Also if there is something you would like to see in a tutorial session then drop me an email. David

Short BIO for Nicole Curtis

Hi All,
I have heard back from our February Judge Nicole Curtis with a little information about her journey with photography, which is as follows:

I first joined Maitland club in the mid 2000’s after I’d returned from India and Nepal with some images from my old canon camera. I have a visual art background but joining the camera club taught me a lot about the technical aspects of photography. I am interested in photography that evokes emotion or shows the viewer a new perspective of aspect of a visual concept. I am currently in the process of completing a PhD in visual learning and am also assistant principal at Rutherford public school.

PSA Interclub

The second round for PSA Interclub entries closes on Sunday Feb 4th.

Please support your club and enter your new images in the appropriate sections. They do not have to have been entered in the club comps, so any new images you have for upcoming club comps are welcome. If they have been entered in PSA Interclub on our club website, they are ready to go for the club comps and you do not have to recreate the images.

Thanks for your help.

2024 Competition will begin in February

Happy New Year to all our members.

Hopefully by now we are all starting to think about our entries for our first competition of 2024.

Our first competition night for 2024 is Monday 12th February. The set subject is “Effective use of blur”.

Our digital images for this competition need to be uploaded by 11:59 pm on Saturday 27th January and our print entries need to be uploaded by 11:59 pm on Saturday 10th February.

Our judge for February is Nicole Curtis. At this stage I don’t have a lot of information about Nicole. I am hoping that she’ll send me a short BIO before our competition night.

IMPORTANT:
Please note that all printed images entered in our competitions must match the digital image upload. If they are obviously different the print will be disqualified on the night.
POTY entries must be the exact same image entered earlier in the year and must also match the digital uploaded image. Entries will be disqualified if printed image displayed varies from the original entry or the digital image.

Have fun creating your images and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at Ian’s presentation on the 22nd. It sounds great.

Results PSA Interclub Rd 1 Photojournalism

Who would have thought that our best result in Round one came in PJ, traditionally not our strongest genre. We sit in equal second place.

Congratulations to Susan, Marie and David on their well deserved awards.

That wraps up the results for the first round. The Round two comp buttons are now active on the website.

Some eagle eyed readers may notice that Marie’s image scored higher than David’s yet received an HM award and not a Merit award. In the judging process, the three judges complete their scores individually and the top total scores are then considered for the awards. It is then that the judges discuss the images and distribute the awards and that can mean that a lower scored image can be elevated to a higher award.
