May Competition
We had another very successful competition night at the club last night. We had quite a few more members join us last night. It is great to see so many of our members in person again.
Our judge Mick Lynch did a fabulous job with the judging. Mick always goes the extra mile and gives us very helpful advice to help improve our images. Mick does emphasise that his suggestions are completely from his point of view and understands that not everyone will agree with his suggestions. Whether we agree or not, Mick always gives us a lot to think about.
I’m looking forward to Mick coming back later in the year to present a workshop for us on Black & White.
Black & White is Mick’s particular speciality. We should all learn a lot from this workshop.
It is great to see prints from our members again. Our print stands were almost full last night. There were some very impressive images.
Congratulations and well done everyone!
Our next competition night is on Monday 9th May and will be held at the club in the auditorium.
Entries will be both digitals and prints.
Our May DIGITAL IMAGES are due in by 11:59 pm Saturday 23th April. That gives us only 11 more days.
Unfortunately, if you miss the deadline there is nothing we can do. The images are passed onto the judge early in the morning on the day after and the competition cannot be reopened.
The good news is that now that we’re back to having prints, if you miss the deadline for the digitals you can choose to put in print entries instead.
The PRINT IMAGE section will close 2 days before competition night (At 11:59 pm on the Saturday before the competition. Saturday 9th April).
You will then bring your prints with you on the night and have them on the stands by 6:30. This will give our judge time to review the prints before our competition night starts at 7 pm.
Please remember, the Print competition is for Prints only.
You have to have a print on the stand for it to be judged as a print. If you cannot get your prints to the club please reach out to other members who might be able to bring them along for you.
Please put the dates in your calendar where you’ll remember.
Our set subject for May is:
“Night Shots” – The definition we have is “Any photo taken outdoors after sunset or before sunrise.
Examples could include blue hour, astrophotography, city night lights”.
As well as our set subject we will have are usual colour and mono categories.
Please remember that we can only enter 3 images each in total with no more than 2 in any category.
Our judge for May is Chris Prior.
Chris has judged for us before. He is a very experienced photographer and judge and has always done a great job of judging.
Below is a bit of information about Chris.
Chris has been interested in photography for 35 years & started out developing & printing B&W film in his home made darkroom
He is a member of APS, Belmont 16’s – ( serving as president for 2 years)
He regularly enters International photography competitions & has won one gold medal, two bronze & one highly commended awards.
His favourite photo subject is surfing & so subsequently has had hundreds of photos published in surfing magazines, such as Tracks, Surfing Life, Waves, Surfing Snaps, People magazine, Kodak’s – My Australia & many others
His motto is:- ‘If it moves I shoot it, if it doesn’t I shoot it too.’
Good luck to everyone and enjoy taking and putting together some “Night Shots” images.

PSA Interclub Rd 3 Scoring all divisions
All of our PSA Interclub images have been scored and images uploaded to PSA website. An image highlighted with red means that it had been used previously. Where that are gaps between selected images it means that either the author already had a higher scoring image or a judgement call was made by me especially when images had received the same score for our final pick.
You can click each link to view the scores for all images.

Important message about Print Competitions.
There have been a couple of occasions this year where members have entered the digital files for their print entries and then for unforeseen reasons haven’t been able to get their prints to the competition night.
The judges have then kindly judged the digitals up on screen so our members didn’t miss out.
This was discussed at the committee meeting last night and the decision was made that moving forward, as this is a print competition the print must be on the stands for judging to take place.
If the print does not make it to the stand on competition night the entry will need to be rejected.
We understand that things crop up beyond anyone’s control and this is of course very unfortunate, but as it’s a print competition we must have a print to be judged.
If you find yourself in the situation that you have your prints ready but for whatever reason cannot get to the club please reach out to fellow club members that may be able to help out by picking up your prints and bringing them to the club for you.
If there is just no way you can get them to the club you’ll have the chance to re-enter them in a later competition.
I hope everyone will be understanding of this situation.
Talking about prints, we also discussed at the committee meeting how great it would be if more prints were entered by our members.
It is of course much easier to enter digitals, but there is really something special about seeing our images in print.
Hopefully we’ll see more prints being entered in the upcoming competitions.

PSA Interclub Photojournalism Rd 2 Results
We have been waiting for ages for this result and it has been a good one for us. We are equal first in Group B with two other clubs. David and Susan Hansell and myself all gained awards. All of the Round 3 comps close on Friday night so any more entries most welcome.
PJ is split into two categories – General and Human Interest hence the G and H beside our entries. Human Interest is for images with interactions which will cause the viewer to react with a smile or sadness or horror for example. Sporting events fall into the General category.
